2023 has been a massive year for the Gawler Town Band! Featuring a band hall change, a variety of both new and returning performances, and much more, 2023 has set us up fantastically for an exciting future.

We enjoyed the opportunity to perform at many community events, such as the Grand Show of Bands in March, the Gawler Show in August, the Hahndorf Band Festival in October, numerous Christmas events in December, and several others. Among this were two of our very own concerts which are always major highlights of our year. Our Summer Soirèe on March 6th (yes, technically Autumn) was complete with a wide range of tunes from across many styles, and perhaps our favourite part, the fancy dressup from all our members. Even more exciting was the grand proposal at the height of the concert, where then-musical director Conor proposed to our flautist Hilary who he met in the band! This also marked Conor’s last performance as musical director, with Harry taking the reins from then on. Certainly a thrilling finish to Conor’s extensive musical director service!

July 28th then saw our Night at the Museum concert. Here, Harry took our audience through the full passage of time, with a set full of music from across history and the globe. Naturally inspired by the classic film Back to the Future, Harry was dressed as the great Dr Emmett Brown, while the rest of the band was dressed as all kinds of historical figures and archetypes plus a few classic film characters. This concert also featured a special guest, Millie Curry. Millie sang Misty with us and her warm, sultry voice truly delighted our audience. We loved playing this show and it went amazingly, especially for Harry’s first concert as musical director.

In October, following discussions with the Gawler council, we were lucky enough to move into our new rehearsal space in the Youth Shak at the Gawler Sports and Community Centre. The new space has been working very well for us and is in a great, accessible location where we are able to be right in the eyes of our community. Thank you to the Gawler council for their support of our band.

We are very proud of what we have achieved in 2023 and we have many exciting ideas in the works for 2024 and beyond. As always, we are immensely grateful for all our supporters and sponsors, and for everyone who was able to attend any of our performances. Without your incredible support, our band could never achieve the levels of success that we have today. We hope to see you around in 2024, and make sure to stay tuned to all our platforms to find out what we have in store!
